Next up is article 16, on the role of civil government. It raises a bunch of great questions about how the “two kingdoms” – or is it the two cities? – relate to one another.
So in addition to the article from the Augsburg, please give Chapter 1 from Peter Leithart’s Against Christianity a read. Don’t worry: Pastor Peter isn’t against Christianity; just against what we’ve often made of it.
When we meet – on St Patrick’s day! – we will dig into not only the role of the state, but the purpose of the state with respect to the church, which is the apple of God’s eye.
